GRAPHIC DESIGN I

Graphic Design I is a semester-long elective for students interested in learning how design thinking and design processes can be used as a catalyst for exploration, innovation, and visual communication. Adobe Illustrator is used to address the many ways design has become a powerful force in the 21st century. Students will develop techniques for creative problem-solving through introductory design projects focusing on vector-based graphics, typography and the synthesis of digital and analog processes in printmaking. Students will become familiar with design principles, focusing on visual communication.

 COURSE OBJECTIVES

Students will know:

  • the history and significance of vector-based image-making and typography and why it needs to be studied and leveraged in practice.

  • basic attributes, vocabulary, and best practices associated with typography and type functions in fine art applications. 

  • foundational skills in Adobe Illustrator

Students will learn how to:

  • Apply digital skills to produce imaged and typography-centered artifacts.

  • Apply analog skills to produce image and typography-centered artifacts.

  • Identify and apply typeface families, typeface classifications, and font styles in digital and analog processes.

  • Identify and apply attributes of the taxonomy of type in solving 21st-century design issues.

  • Manipulate typography for communication and/or expression.

  • Apply design principles used in typography to produce original layouts and artworks.


GRADING
Projects will be evaluated based on rubrics outlining the goals for each project; the application of new skills, creativity, and personal growth. Sketchbook assignments may include preparatory digital or analog sketches, experimentations, and practice assignments. Studio practice includes processes, research, participation, and effort.

STUDIO TIME

Students are free to use Studio 017 or the Mac Lab during their blocks of free time, lunch, or after school. The instructor is available every day after school until 3:00 p.m.
